Uptown’s female pastor is making church more accessible for all

Hosting Sunday worship services in the House of Blues isn’t the only extraordinary action Uptown Church is taking to build a more diverse community. Rev. Joy Gonzalez leads the congregation as a female pastor with the mission of making church more accessible for all.

“I believe it’s part of God’s vision for expanding the Kingdom on Earth,” she said. “That all people are represented not only in the church but in pulpits and around conference room tables and in executive leadership.”

Rev. Gonzalez envisioned a plan that would bring church to a group of people in need in one of the most connected parts of Dallas. She proposed her idea for Uptown Church to Rev. Paul Rasmussen, Senior Minister at HPUMC, and church leadership. And the rest is history. One year after Uptown’s first birthday celebration, Gonzalez is continuing her work to “push back against the messaging in the world that God is not for you and hold up the banner that says no, ‘God is for all people.’”

“We have an amazing opportunity to not only change the game in Dallas but change the game for church in our world,” she said.
