Resurrection Eggs: A kid friendly Easter activity

March 30, 2020

Resurrection Eggs are a fun and easy way to teach your family about the true meaning of Easter. While we may not be able to escape the commercialization of Easter, this is one way your family can enjoy the bunny baskets, eggs, and chocolate, all while keeping Christ at the center of your celebration.

What you’ll need:

  • 12 Plastic Easter Eggs
  • 11 small tokens to place inside (we’ll get to that)

How it works:

Inside the eggs you’ll place a small token representing a piece of the Easter Story. We have a hunch that you could probably find most of these items around the house. Also, don’t be afraid to make this guide your own! Don’t have a red bead? Try using a red piece of cloth or a red button! We encourage you to be creative and use the Scripture as your blueprint.

Each day during Holy Week, open the eggs for that specific day with your kids and talk about what each symbol means. This is a great moment to read the scriptures surrounding each event in the life of Jesus together as a family.

What goes in the eggs:

Day One - Palm Sunday

Egg 1: A Small Leaf – for the palm leaves waved as Jesus entered Jerusalem.
Scripture: Matthew 21:1-11

Monday

Egg 2: Three silver coins – for the 30 pieces of silver Judas received for betraying Jesus.
Scripture: Matthew 26:14-16

Tuesday

Egg 3: Cracker or bread – for the first communion Jesus shared with his disciples
Scripture: Matthew 26:26

Wednesday

Egg 4: Piece of Rope – Pilate hands Jesus over to be crucified.
Scripture: Mark 15:15

Thursday

Egg 5: Purple Cloth – for the robe placed on Jesus after his arrest
Egg 6: Thorns – for the crown of thorns placed on Jesus’ head.
Matthew 27:27-31

Good Friday

Egg 7: Red Beads – for the Savior’s blood shed for us.
Egg 8: Nail – for the crucifixion
Scripture: John 19:16-17

Saturday

Egg 9: A pebble – for the stone that was rolled in front of the tomb
Egg 10: Small piece of white cloth – for the burial clothes Jesus was laid to rest in
Scripture: Matthew 27:57-61

Easter Sunday

Egg 11: Empty – for the empty tomb
Egg 12: Small picture of the Savior
Matthew 28:55-56

We hope that you and your family have a blessed Easter weekend as you remember the journey to the cross and the resurrection of our Lord together.
