On February 18 and 19, six months of work came together in two fun-filled performances in a packed Wesley Hall. HPUMC’s Belong Disability Ministries Spotlight Musical Theater’s newest show, “Whose Hollow?,” concludes a fantastic thirteenth season of the program.

Spotlight is a theater group comprised of older teens and adults with disabilities who work with a professional artistic team to create and perform an original musical. Cast members discussed hopes, fears, and current events in order to come up with the songs, characters, and storyline of “Whose Hollow?”

The result was a lively performance with a lot of heart. The cast and crew landed in a small town in the 1980s, with fun outfits, goats, a county fair, Elvis impersonators, a hilarious lawyer, and a family feud. What more could an audience member ask for?

Each voice was heard, and each voice was supported and lifted up in the making of the show. Veteran actors mentored and encouraged the new cast members through challenges such as nervousness and stage fright.

“Whose Hollow?” offered a great night to be at HPUMC, and a great night to support Spotlight. Those with disabilities are too often overlooked and underestimated in our society, but they belong everywhere, including on stage, and they can achieve whatever they set their minds to.

For two nights, the cast members were celebrities, smiling and waving to applause from a Wesley Hall filled with loved ones and fans. Spotlight Musical Theater makes it clear that this incredible group doesn’t just belong—they shine.
