WEEK ONE
Key Thought/Summary
For centuries, God spoke to His people through prophets, messengers, and leaders—each pointing to someone greater than themselves who would fulfill all of God’s promises. The author of Hebrews begins by declaring that this someone is finally here in the person of Jesus. He surpasses all who came before: greater than the angels who delivered God’s message, greater than Moses, and greater than the priests who interceded for Israel. Yet, despite his greatness, the Son of God humbled himself by taking on flesh to provide us everlasting rest, serve as our perfect mediator, and offer himself as the ultimate sacrifice. As you read, consider what it means to you that Jesus is exalted above all yet draws near to us in our humanity and struggles.
WEEK TWO
Key Thought/Summary
Israel’s priests were meant to be a bridge between God and humanity, mediating His presence and blessing. They wore garments that echoed Eden and oversaw sacrifices to restore the people to God. But from the beginning, their priesthood fell short. They could administer God’s forgiveness, but they couldn’t fix the problem of sin or heal the human heart. What’s more, they were sinful themselves. By Jesus’ time, corruption was rampant, and the system was broken. Would there ever be a priest who could truly bridge heaven and earth? Hebrews answers with a resounding yes. Jesus is the High Priest we have always needed—without sin, offering himself as the perfect, once-and-for-all sacrifice. He is a mediator we can trust fully and forever.
WEEK THREE
Key Thought/Summary
No more repeated sacrifices, no more barriers—Jesus’ death changed everything. The old covenant sacrifices required daily offerings and annual rituals, never fully solving the problem of sin. But Jesus’ once-and-for-all sacrifice covers all our past and future failures if we trust in Him. He is the greater sacrifice, and His blood is sufficient to cleanse us completely. As a result, we can have the confidence to enter God’s presence. Whereas the old covenant permitted only the High Priest to enter God’s presence once a year, Jesus' death has made it possible for us to access God at any time! What does it look like for you to trust fully in His finished work and boldly draw near to God?
WEEK FOUR
Key Thought/Summary
Jesus offers us something better. He provides everything the old covenant did—and so much more. With such an amazing Savior, it only makes sense to follow the great models of faith who have come before us by trusting what we cannot yet see. Many of the heroes of our faith died without receiving the fullness of God’s promises, yet they held on, knowing we will one day share in God’s goodness in the New Creation. Now, we run our race with endurance, fixing our eyes on Jesus. When life feels overwhelming, Hebrews urges us to picture the faithful who have gone before us, cheering us on. What would it look like to run your race today with endurance, believing that God will be true to His word?
