Acolytes at HPUMC
“I was glad when they said to me, ‘Let us go into the house of the Lord!’” Psalm 122:1
Do you know that acolytes:
- Carry the cross into the service, reminding us of Jesus’ sacrifice for us?
- Draw us to the communion table with the sound of festive bells as we celebrate the Lord’s Supper together?
- By carrying the symbols of our faith, are an important part of our worship services in the sanctuary, as the ministers, the choir, and those who prepare the bread and wine for communion?
Here are the acolyte’s responsibilities
- Serve from September to May, performing their duties faithfully at
regular intervals throughout the year at a particular service (8:30, 9:30 or 11:00) and finding their own substitute from the list of other acolytes when they won’t be able to come.
- Arrive at least 15 minutes before the service so they can robe and receive any last minutes instructions from the worship director and remain through the entire service (except at 9:30, when you may go on to Sunday School).
- Attend an acolyte training meeting in August with one of their parents to learn about and practice what we do as acolytes and to learn about worship.
- Have their parents assist them in arriving on time on Sundays so they can help by supporting the acolytes and understand what they do.
