How I got connected...

Sharon Hunter is the kind of new member every minister dreams of having in their congregation!  So….when she began her journey here at HPUMC (just a short 7 months ago) – we couldn’t have been more blessed!

Sharon shared with us that after only visiting a couple of times, she felt inspired to keep on coming back…..and not only for worship!  Sharon immediately became involved with programs such as Turner Twelve (youth mentoring program), ushering at Cornerstone, and serving communion each month.

Sharon’s has a unique way of sharing God’s spirit and love – but does it every time she smiles.  She said the greatest thing she has learned about HPUMC is what a loving and warm church it is – and how grateful she is that the members here all share a common goal – to serve God and our fellow man.

She feels her personal calling is to serve for the good of others – and plans to do that for as long as she is here.

Jason Tuckerman has truly caught the spirit of Connecting and Serving.  His initial reasons for getting involved with the Health Ministry were two-fold.  Number one, he is a medical student and thought he could be of some use – and two, he was inspired by the writings of Paul, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.  Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also the interests of others.  Your attitude should be the same as that of Jesus Christ:  Who being in the very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness” (Philippians 2:3-7).  He thought that if Jesus, in all His glory and splendor, was able to display such amazing humility in his service to us, then he had absolutely no excuse for not doing so as well.

What he didn’t expect was to learn all he has from the precious children in the Night OWLS program.  Spending time with this special and unique group of children is the highlight of his week.  “Serving others is a wonderful way to be continually reminded of the needs that exist within the church and our community – and an even better way to put the problems in my life in their proper perspective”.  He considers it a true privilege!  He also learned that we have some extraordinary volunteers at this church – and has grown in love and dedication, with them, while participating in this great program.

When I asked Jason how being involved has changed him, he simply replied, “In John 15:17 Christ commands us to love one another”.
