09_Missions_HELPS-Guatemala.jpgHPUMC community members are being sought to join Medical Teams and Stove Building Teams traveling to Guatemala.  Two missions are planned: September 18-29, and January 2011.  The mission opportunity is being organized and offered to HPUMC through HELPS International.  Medical Teams need volunteers with medical skills as well as cooks and translators.  The Stove Building Teams need able bodies (no specific experience is needed to join).  Medical Teams will provide medical care to the local population, while Stove Building Teams install stoves in a neighboring village.

HELPS International, a Dallas based organization, began providing medical care to Guatemala’s poor in 1984.  In 2000, HELPS realized the need for a safer, more efficient stove to help eliminate health and economic needs. In 2000, HELPS began distributing the ONIL stoves. The ONIL Stove has proven to reduce smoke levels in dwellings by 99%; eliminate burns and/or uncontrolled fires; reduces respiratory health issues; and reduce wood fuel consumption by 70%.  The combination of a stove team and a medical team offers flexible opportunities to serve the local population in multiple capacities.  To view videos of the work being done by the medical and stove teams, click here.

If you have a heart to serve the Lord and His people, please consider joining us on this team. The medical care and stoves that this team provides will change the lives of many families. The trip cost is $2,000 per person and includes airfare.
