Health/Special Needs

Your spiritual health is not our only concern.  HPUMC Health Ministry provides the kind of health support and education you most need today. Just as Christ cared for his flock, the church cares about your family and our community. It’s the kind of care we need most, Christ centered and filled with love and devotion.  We hope you’ll take a moment to learn about us. Your call with any questions or suggestions is welcome.

DO YOU KNOW:  March 7-13 is National Sleep Awareness Week

Sleep is a gift from God

It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil, for God gives sleep to his beloved." ` Psalm 127:2

The Psalmist in this text talks about keeping a regular routine for sleep and trying to keep stress to a minimum, but how difficult this is in these trying days!  Nearly 40% of adults report trouble with insomnia, and growing numbers of teens and younger children are sleep deprived as well.

Sleep is essential to your well-being.  It is necessary for the body to recharge its batteries, heal its wounds, rest the spirit and regroup for another day.  Everyone needs a slightly different amount of sleep but everyone needs good quality rest.  It is now recommended that we need 7-8 hours of sleep per night.  For additional information, contact HPUMC Faith-Community nurse, at  vandiverc@hpumc.org  or 214.523.2209.   (International Parish Nurse Resource Center, 2009)

Faith Community Nursing
Faith Community Nursing or Parish Nursing, is a component of Health Ministry which is dedicated to provide a comprehensive approach to improving the physical, emotional, and spiritual health of HPUMC members.  Parish Nursing complements the ministry of Pastoral Care and helps strengthen individuals, families, the congregation and the community.  Cheryl Vandiver, RN MSN is the parish nurse and director of Health Ministry.  Cheryl is on staff  to serve as a resource for health education and support.  For more information, please call 214.523.2209.

09_night_owls.jpgNight OWLS (Out With Loving Sitters)
Children with special medical requirements or who need physical care deserve a special dose of fun. As do their families. This service is provided by a team of nurses, friends and child care professionals who spend the evening caring for and working with these children. We even have special activities for siblings. The result is a chance for parents to enjoy a night out with friends and family, or a chance to tend to home needs without worry. If you are in need of our Night OWLS program, or would like to volunteer your time, call 214.523.2284. Find out more >

Health-related Groups
Support and educational groups provide umbrellas of care during challenging times for members and their families. Groups are developed based on health-related concerns or life-changing events.   We encourage anyone needing help with physical, emotional or spiritual concerns  to call one of our ministers, to take part in counseling sessions offered individually, or to attend one of the health-related support groups.  For additional information, contact Cheryl Vandiver, RN at 214.523.2209 or vandiverc@hpumc.org.

FOCUS on Mental Illness.
thewillofgodbook.jpgA group for Families of Concern, Understanding and Support for loved ones with mental illness. We are taking a faith-based approach to consider how family lives are impacted by mental illness.  We continue to meet on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.  Mark your calendar - 2nd Tuesday of the month, 7:00-8:15 PM, Room 120.
We will introduce the book:  The Will of God, by Leslie Weatherhead, which will be our discussion point for the next several months.  Books are available from Amazon, or you may obtain one from Cheryl Vandiver for $6.00. We will find the principles explored in this book to be relevant to our journey in mental illness.
