Mission
Wesley-Rankin Community Center is a faith-based organization building a stronger multi-generational West Dallas community characterized by more graduates, responsible parents, and active, empowered citizens with self-determination and advancing economic independence.
Services
Children
- Headstart: Developmental learning and day care to 3-5 yr. old children
- Elementary After-School Program: Children (grades 1-5) receive a hot meal and a wide variety of spiritual, educational, and recreational activities. [Monday-Thursday, 3-6pm]
- Evening Tutoring: Primarily provides homework and reading assistance. [Monday/ Tuesday evenings]
- Summer Day Camp: Elementary (grades 1-5) and youth (grades 6-high school) participate in Bible lessons, music, art, recreation, reading, and computer time. [Monday-Thursday, 9am-3pm]
- Girl Scouts
Youth
- Youth After-School Program: Youth receive homework help, tutoring, and other educational activities. [Monday – Thursday, 3-6pm]
- United Methodist Youth Fellowship: Provides junior and senior high youth with an opportunity to participate in worship planning, share groups, mission outreach, and community events. The youth also attend Rio Grande Conference camps and activities sponsored by the North Texas Conference.
- Bridge to College: Helps to create new business leaders, teachers, and positive role models through scholarships.
- Compadres and Comadres Mentoring: Groups of young women and young men meet with adult mentors to discuss life issues, celebrate the heritage of different cultures, and take field trips to museums, college campuses, and military bases. [Second Saturday of each month]
Family
- Care 4 Kid and Families: Parents become active and informed about their children’s lives by volunteering at Wesley-Rankin or within the community.
- Shoe Giveaway: More than 200 pairs of new shoes are distributed to children in need. [August]
- Thanksgiving: Thanksgiving lunch is served to the community (usually 100-150 individuals), and families also receive Thanksgiving food baskets.
- Catering: Women and young people re involved in Wesley- Rankin programs cater year-round for United Methodist church and UMW dinners and other organizations in the city.
Community
- Computer Learning Center: Serves as a technology center for all ages by offering educational software, internet connectivity, Microsoft Office applications classes, possibility for online job searches, and help with electronic resumes.
- English as Second Language (ESL) Classes: Tuesday/Thursday mornings and evenings.
- GED Classes: Students are instructed and encouraged in a nurturing atmosphere.
- Senior Citizens: Lunch, bingo, and fellowship. Transportation provided to and from the center, as well as for local excursions and medical appointments. [Monday- Friday]
- Sewing: Free classes are offered Tuesday and Thursday 10am-12 noon. The donated machines, fabric, and notions are available to the community for independent work during the rest of the week.
Hours
Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm, specific program hours vary.
Volunteer Opportunities
Long Term
- Teach a GED, parenting, or nutrition class in the 16-week Fall or Spring semester.
- Teach sewing classes.
- Support "Bridge to College" students with cards, phone calls, or small gifts throughout the school year.
Short Term
- Share craft activities with senior citizens or after-school programs.
- Prepare a noon meal for GED/parenting class and senior citizens any weekday.
- Provide snacks for children who attend on-site Summer Day Camp (Project Transformation), Monday through Thursday in June and July.
- Help coordinate or participate in our annual Care 4 Kids.
