Mission
To provide quality safety and shelter to battered women and their children through crisis intervention and short term crisis therapeutics and to reduce the occurrence of violence against women and children in the greater Dallas area. Genesis is also committed to raising the level of community awareness regarding the pervasiveness and effects of domestic violence.
Services
Domestic Violence Counseling Services
- Individual Therapy is provided for adult women coping with issues related to domestic violence.
- Group Therapy joins women with similar experiences related to domestic violence and provides psycho educational information and emotional support.
- Child Therapy includes individual play therapy, children’s educational groups and adolescent counseling (for ages 2 - 18)
- Parent Training teaches parents how to improve relationships with their children and how to break the cycle of violence with their children. It is provided on an individual basis and/ or in a group with other parents.
- Expressive Arts Counseling uses art and creative expression as tools in the healing process for survivors.
- Psychosocial Assessments allow clients and counselors to identify problems as well as appropriate means of intervention.
- Crisis Intervention helps clients de-escalate from traumatic occurrences. In addition, clients address short-term, attainable goals and safety planning during crisis situations.
- Community Education is available for individuals and groups interested in learning more about domestic violence.
- School Intervention allows counselors to provide therapy for children and adolescents in their schools.
Sexual Assault Counseling Services
- Individual Therapy is offered for survivors of childhood sexual abuse or abuse by a partner or spouse.
- Support Groups are offered for adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse or abuse by a partner or spouse.
- Play Therapy and Adolescent Counseling are offered for child survivors of sexual abuse.
- Secondary Survivor Therapy is offered for parents, friends and partners of sexual abuse survivors.
- Community Education is available for individuals and groups interested in learning more about sexual abuse.
Volunteer Opportunities
- Children's Department Weeknight PAL: Volunteers spend 1 hour with the children at our shelter or transitional housing facility, playing or facilitating a structured activity. Choose any night, Monday-Thursday from 7pm-8pm. Weekly commitment preferred, bi-monthly okay. 1 hour orientation and 1 hour of training required
- Hotline Assistant: Volunteers are needed to help answer Hotline calls at our Shelter and to assist staff with light office duties. Anytime, Monday-Sunday. 1 hour orientation and 5+ hour training is required.
- Resale Store Assistant: Volunteers are needed to help staff receive, sort, tag and display donated goods for sale in our stores Monday-Saturday from 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. 3-4 hour shifts, please. 2918 Oak Lawn Avenue, 214.520.6644. 1 hour orientation.
- Health Fair Representative: Volunteers represent Genesis at various Health Fairs in churches, schools and companies around town. Usually assisted by a staff person from GWS, this important position helps us to make the public aware of our facility and programs by handing out pamphlets, brochures, etc. and by answering questions. 1 hour orientation.
- Court Partnership: Volunteers from GWS and other local DV shelters help to monitor the proceedings in Court 10, the family violence court for Dallas County. Flexible daytime schedule. 1 hour orientation and 2 hours training required.
