How to Raise an Adult: Our DOING Is UNDOING Them

All parents want to help their children thrive. Yet as parents face increasing pressure, they are often tempted to do more for their children than is really helpful.

Based on the book How to Raise an Adult, our fall Parent Quarterly will focus on understanding the relationship between confidence and competence, and the importance of allowing children to make their own mistakes and develop resilience, resourcefulness, and inner determination. Learn to identify moments where parents’ responses can be particularly growth-producing for their kids, and where a little “benign neglect” can prove helpful.

This Parent Quarterly will serve as a kick-off for a Reading Group on How to Raise an Adult

For parents of children ages 2 -18

Spiritual Formation for Moms

This fall, Spiritual Formation for Moms will read We Saved You A Seat,  by Lisa-Jo Baker. This Bible study explores our relationship with Jesus as the ultimate model for authentic friendship.

In this busy world, we too often try to appear ‘fine’, warding off authenticity and avoiding intimate friendships with the women God has placed in our lives. Yet nothing shapes us like the impact of a friend, that’s how Jesus radically and intimately connects with us. So instead of chasing perfection, overcome your fear of being known and find the courage to connect.

How to Raise an Adult: A Reading Group

This unique class offers the chance to read and discuss one of the most important books on parenting, How to Raise an Adult, by Julie Lythcott-Haims. During these five sessions you will learn about age appropriate responsibilities, the importance of self-sufficiency, the need for children to make their own choices and what behaviors will help children attain maturity.

Lythcott-Haims, dean of freshmen at Stanford for ten years and mom of two teens, provides many valuable insights. Dividing the book into manageable portions with discussion on insights and implementation carries her message home.

Please purchase your own book prior to attending class. You will complete assigned readings of the book before coming to class.

Sugar & Spice: Raising our Teen Daughters

This class on teen girls will begin by framing our girls in developmental terms: where they are and where they are headed. We'll consider special concerns for girls; including how they build self-esteem and identity, how to clarify “intimacy” and connection in a world of social media, and how to re-frame sexuality in a way which is healthy and wholesome…for life.  We’ll end the five-session series with questions/answers and with real life scenarios to “rehearse” difficult situations before we face them at home!

Mean Speak - The Power of Words to Hurt or Heal

In today’s world, we increasingly feel assaulted by words. Incidents of bullying and intolerance are prevalent in today's media.  While we can shrug off the nightly news, many of us feel "mean speak" encroaching into our children's lives. But what if we were able to use the power of speech to build and grow? This class for middle school and high school parents will explore these issues and the assumption that words have power.

Parenting Project - Bullying: The Power of Words

Whether it's on social media or face to face, in public arenas or in our homes, words have tremendous power to lift us up, or tear us to shreds. Earlier and earlier, it seems, our kids are realizing the power their words hold, and the power words hold over them. Join us for a discussion panel, on the power of words, bullying, and what we as parents of all ages can do about it.
