AS09 Orthodox Iconography—Theology in Color

Through a survey of history and theology, through a study of some representative examples, through the biography of St. Seraphim iconographer Vladimir Grigorenko, and through a tour of St. Seraphim’s Orthodox Church with her iconographer, students will explore the meaning of icons, their distinctive art, and their place in Christian worship.
More than the use of art in a religious context, the Orthodox icon joins with the liturgy and its calendar, the Holy Scriptures, the hymnography, and the sacred Tradition to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Orthodox icons—their colors and techniques—portray the story and message of redemption in the same way words and sentences tell the story in the Gospels. Often misunderstood by modern iconoclasm, this course will explain the orthodox meaning and place of icons in Christian worship.
