Reclaiming Family Time
October is upon us. We’re finishing up the first 6 weeks of school, and routines are starting to settle in at our house. The September craziness is giving way to a more predictable schedule, however my family is still moving at breakneck speeds most days. Between school, work, sports, and homework… family time not spent with a focused agenda seems to have been squeezed out. Does this sound like your house, too?
When was the last time you just played with your children? When was the last time you just got down on their level and devoted your whole self being fully present with them? It’s tough, I know. As soon as we decide to engage, the phone rings, an email comes in, or the dishes need to be done. And then… we missed it. We missed an opportunity to show our children that they are worthy of our time. We don’t intend to disengage, but it happens. So what can we do about it?
I am really good about overscheduling my family. If my husband and I aren’t intentional about building white space into our calendar, then activities that don’t align with our priorities quickly devour that time. I finally began living IN my calendar and scheduling only what is reasonable to accomplish while also scheduling white space. Without margin in our lives, we squeeze out the very space where God usually does His best work! Sadly, if it doesn’t get scheduled, it isn’t near as likely to happen.
I am so excited about the great opportunities available to our families this month in D6 helping your family and mine engage with one another in fun and unique ways! Schedule some white space with your family, and have some good old-fashioned fun at any one of our D6 family events this month! I would love to see you and your family there!
