Kingdom Singers celebrate one year of service
What a difference a year makes! Last June, the Music Department at Highland Park United Methodist Church began an all-inclusive choir, with just five brave singers and three amazing helpers. Now, one year later, we have sung, rung, and praised the Lord with over 80 singers and helpers to date.
Kingdom Singers is just one of the many communities at HPUMC for kids and adults with special needs. Over the past year, I’ve witnessed a spirit of love and acceptance among our participants that has changed my heart and my level of joy. They are willing to try anything, learn everything, and to sing with gusto and energy, even in the heat of the summer and the chill of the winter.
Since we began our weekly schedule in January, an amazing thing has happened. Some of our singers, who started out as non-verbal participants, are now using their God-Given voices, as well as sign language, to share the love of our God with their congregation.
The Kingdom Singers serve as worship leaders at The Feast.
Every week, our members read Scripture, lead prayers, take up the Offering, serve Holy Communion, and lead worship. This is a large part of our original vision for The Feast – that our special needs friends would play integral roles in leading this unique worship service. These leaders have grown in confidence, and in bringing their own personalities into worship.
Kingdom Singers are ambassadors.
They demonstrate the love of Christ in every word they sing, in every hug they give, in every smile they share. The joy is palpable and real when Sunday afternoon comes around. The blessings the helpers receive are many, and I can’t imagine my life without these amazing folks in my life.
Kingdom Singers are always welcoming to new members and helpers.
Join us! No experience necessary! Sunday afternoons, 4:00, Room 142 (in children’s area). The Feast is at 5:00 in Room 120.
